Rain Shadow Gardens' Gardening Experience
We've had successes and we've had failures and everything in between.
Our most successful garden was very small: 40x20. Every inch possible was filled with roses,
lilacs, flower bulbs, a cherry tree, and assorted veggies.
It was gorgeous and incredibly simple to keep watered with our drip irrigation system.
Our most recent project is a piece of land about three quarters of an acre. Our dreams for it were large and lofty.
A dear friend, Stephen Clearheart Johnson, laid out a
walking labyrinth on most of it. Other friends
helped to lay out a Medicine Wheel on the rest. This was a major project with the following sequence of events:
- Back hoed the land because it was so compacted
- Tilled the land
- Marked the walking paths for the labyrinth and Medicine Wheel
- Installed drip irrigation
- Planted seedlings between the paths
Then we sat back and watched almost all of the plants whither and die. We got replacements for the dead plants and watched them die, too.
After watching one plant after another die, we finally had our water tested; sodium and fluoride were off the charts . . . No wonder the poor plants didn't make it.
Do you know of any salt-tolerant pretty plants?
There is a moral to this story: steps one and two should always be to have your water and soil tested.
A water test is crucial if you rely on well water.
