"As a veterinarian, I am very impressed with the Guard-n-Edge product, its durability and easy application. As my feelings are strong for the pets and clients I see, I would like to be able to introduce your product to them in hopes of avoiding the many lacerations and severe tendon injuries caused by metal lawn edging. . as well as getting them out there to fix the problem sooner then later..You would not believe the number of repeat offenders we have seen."
Michael DVM

After hearing numerous horror stories about people and pets being rushed to emergency centers bleeding from deep cuts and injuries caused by metal edging while playing in their own backyard, Scott Wilson put his mind to work. Metal edging is commonly used in landscaping to separate grass from garden, and that's where the danger lies. Scott wanted to create a product to keep pets and people safer. An engineer by trade, Scott brainstormed and worked to develop a product that would make our yards a safer place to play and work. After 3 years and 12 revisions, he was finally satisfied. In 2006 Ren Concepts, the parent company launched Guard-n-Edge, a decorative, protective cover for sharp, dangerous landscape edging. . This super tough polymer material withstands the hardiest of conditions to protect children and pets from the harm caused by metal edging in their own backyard.

Frequently Asked Questions about Guard-n-Edge

Do the "U" shaped stakes need to be removed first, or can Guard-n-Edge be installed over the stakes?
Sorry, but the "U" shaped metal edging stakes must be removed first, then install Guard-n-Edge over the metal edging, and then the "U" shaped stakes can be re-installed over the top of Guard-n-Edge.
How does Guard-n-Edge hold up to a string trimmer?
String trimmers will not damage Guard-n-Edge Uncovered metal edging will usually cut the string trimmer line. Guard-n-Edge will protect the line from being cut on the metal edging. Be sure that Guard-n-Edge is installed securely before using a string trimmer.
How does Guard-n-Edge hold up to a lawn mower?
Guard-n-Edge will help protect your mowers tires from getting cut on the exposed metal edging. However, nothing will hold up to a rotating mower blade. Our advice is "AVOID CONTACT WITH LAWN MOWER BLADES!"
Does Guard-n-Edge come in longer lengths?
No, Guard-n-Edge is manufactured in 36 inch lengths for several reasons. 1.) Three feet is a much easier length to work with during installation 2.) The thermal expansion gaps are much less at three feet. 3.) It is much easier to ship and transport
How will Guard-n-Edge hold up in the outdoor elements? Is it UV protected?
Yes, Guard-n-Edge is compounded with UV inhibitors to resist the affects of UV light. Guard-n-Edge is injection molded from a high impact polypropylene. Other products that are molded from this same material are outdoor playground equipment, snow shovels, and many exterior automotive parts.
Why is black Guard-n-Edge less expensive than the colors?
Black color concentrate is less expensive. Carbon that produces the black color is a natural UV inhibitor. A special additive must be added to the other colors to protect from UV light.
Is Guard-n-Edge affected by thermal expansion or shrinkage?
Yes, all material shrinks and expands with temperature changes. Even the metal edging itself will have a slight length change as temperatures change. It is normal for slight gaps of about 1/8 inch to appear between the sections at cold temperatures.
Can a mallet or hammer be used to assist with installation?
Only a soft faced mallet should be used to tap Guard-n-Edge into place. A hard faced hammer could mar the surface of Guard-n-Edge. Do not pound on Guard-n-Edge in order to drive the metal edging into the ground.
Our metal edging has sunken into the ground, and only a small amount is visible. Can Guard-n-Edge still be installed, or does the metal edging height need to be adjusted before installation?
Guard-n-Edge is designed to hug the metal edging and in most cases it is possible to push Guard-n-Edge onto the metal edging without increasing the height of the edging.
Will Guard-n-Edge install over roll top metal edging?
Guard-n-Edge will fit over roll top edging. However, depending on the style of roll top edging, it can be a very tight fit when installing over two over lapping sections of roll top edging. We suggest that you request a free small sample piece of Guard-n-Edge to check the fit before you purchase.
How do you cut Guard-n-Edge?
A hacksaw can be used to cut Guard-n-Edge to any desired length. Another method is to score the flex joint at the desired length on both sides with a utility knife and then simply break Guard-n-Edge on the scored joint.
